Celebrating diversity through apprenticeships

Apprenticeships play a crucial role in breaking down the barriers to opportunity. Through offering direct training on skills and helping both young and experienced professionals think about their future, they can offer pathways into professions and industries which might otherwise seem inaccessible.

So this National Apprenticeship Week, we wanted to take an opportunity to highlight how apprenticeships across Genuit have given women access to rewarding careers they may never have considered before, by sharing three personal stories from around the business:

erin

Meet Erin Price, Sheet Metal Apprentice

Apprenticeship started: September 2023

Can you describe your day to day activities?

I carry out basic machine maintenance and operate various machines to produce production components.

How did they feel about the industry before joining?

I didn’t really know what to expect before starting my apprenticeship at Nuaire as I hadn’t had any prior experience. I had my doubts at first, as I knew that I would be the only female working in the sheet metal area, but my original idea of what it would be like was definitely proved wrong.

How do you feel being a woman in a male-dominated industry?

It’s a lot better than others may think, I was surprised by how quickly I settled in and was welcomed by everyone. Now I don’t really give it a second thought.

Have you seen any changes since joining?

There have definitely been some changes since I first started at Nuaire that I personally really appreciate. One of which being a women’s only bathroom being added to the factory floor, which is great!

Has your identity or gender affected how you carry out your role?

I don’t believe that how I carry out my role has been affected by my gender as I have the same responsibilities and capabilities as other apprentices on sheet metal which gives me confidence that I am able to perform as I should.

What attracted you to a role in the Construction/Building materials Industry?

I was first interested in working in this industry as I knew that it would provide me with an opportunity to further my career in mechanical engineering and the construction industry seemed the most suitable for me.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy being able to work away from a desk and getting stuck in with the manual side of things.

What would you say to other females who are thinking about applying for an Apprenticeship in the construction/Building Materials Industry?

In my own experience I’d say just go for it and apply. Apprenticeships in the construction industry are a great way to start your career and really aid your future as you gain so much experience and knowledge in the process.

sabina-solinska

Meet Sabina Solinska, a Business Administration Apprentice at Polypipe Building Products, has dedicated seven years to the company thus far. Her journey began in the Assembly department, followed by a transition to the moulding shop. Initially, Sabina had reservations about entering the manufacturing industry, particularly the moulding shop, traditionally perceived as a male-dominated domain. However, witnessing the numerous women thriving within Polypipe Building Products quickly dispelled her anxieties.

The moulding shop, with its physical demands, initially challenged Sabina’s preconceived notions. She soon realized that the work, while requiring effort, was not impossible for women. This experience solidified her belief that women are equally capable of excelling in any role within Polypipe Building Products, regardless of traditional gender stereotypes.

Currently pursuing her apprenticeship in the Learning and Development department, Sabina observes a balanced gender representation. This contrasts with her earlier experiences, where male dominance was more prevalent. She believes the increasing number of women in traditionally male-dominated roles is a powerful testament to their strength and capabilities.

Reflecting on the impact of gender on her career, Sabina suggests that women may possess inherent strengths such as organizational skills and resilience in stressful situations. These qualities, she believes, contribute significantly to professional success.

Sabina’s decision to join the construction/building materials industry stemmed from a desire for a challenging and fulfilling career. Seeking a departure from warehouse or retail settings, she was drawn to Polypipe Building Products’ positive reputation as a leading manufacturer.

Through her journey, Sabina has not only achieved professional growth but also challenged and redefined gender roles within the industry. Her story serves as an inspiration to other women considering careers in manufacturing, demonstrating that with dedication and resilience, they can thrive in any field.
